Obituary of Katherine C. Carter
Please share a memory of Katherine to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Katherine C. Carter was born November 3, 1925 in Okmulgee, OK to Johnie & Viola (Demery) Cooks and passed from this life August 12, 2015 in Tulsa, OK at the age of 89.
Katherine joined Mount Zion Baptist Church in Okmulgee as a child and was baptized. In 1950, she united with New Salem Baptist Church. Later in life she joined Glad Tidings Church, under the leadership of Pastor Marcus Anderson. Katherine was employed at The Ambassador Hotel, Service Merchandise and The Petroleum Club in various capacities.
She married William S. Cottrell in June 1941. Seven children were born to this union. Later, December 19, 1977, she married Percy Carter. She loved laughing and talking on the telephone with her friends and family. Katherine loved competition. Her favorite television shows were news and sports and TV Evangelists. She watched news religiously, and got a big kick out of the bickering politicians. She loved all things pretty and would out run you for a gorgeous pair of earrings. Katherine loved makeup, especially red lipstick. Even in the nursing home, she requested her favorite shade.
Food was her passion. She loved shopping for food, prepping it, cooking and eating it. She was sometimes affectionately called “Cluck Cluck” because she ate chicken so often. Onion was consumed at all her meals. She would sometimes peel one and, while admiring it at arms' length, would say, “Ain’t this a pretty onion?” She cooked until prevented by her health.
Katherine was preceded in death by her parents; her husband, Percy Carter; a daughter, Thomasine Cottrell; two infant sons; and a brother, Jack Cooks. She is survived by her children Edna Gannon, Elizabeth McHenry (Preston), William Lovell Cottrell (Jeraldine) and Loretta Ellis (Troy); her brother, Johnie Cooks, Jr.; 10 grandchildren; 19 great grandchildren; 6 great great grandchildren and several nieces and nephews.
Katherine will lie in state 10 a.m. to 8 p.m. Tuesday with family receiving friends from 5-7 p.m. at the Ninde Brookside Funeral Home. A funeral will be held at 11:00 a.m. Wednesday at the Ninde Brookside Funeral Home Chapel, 3841 S. Peoria. She will be laid to rest at Memorial Park Cemetery.
