Obituary of Marion Hendry

Please share a memory of Marion to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Marion Leon Hendry (affectionately known as Mickey) was born on May 17, 1947 in Savannah, Georgia, the oldest child born to the union of Leon and Jacqueline Hendry. Mickey received his formal education in Midway, Georgia; Tampa, Florida; and Ellsworth Air Force Base, South Dakota, graduating from Douglas High School in 1965. He continued his education by earning a Bachelor's Degree in 1969 from Black Hills State University; Spearfish, South Dakota. He also attended Harper College; Palatine, Illinois. Mickey played the clarinet in the Marching Band, and was a key player in football and track & field. While at college, he set many records in track & field. Mickey was united in holy matrimony to Gwen Thompson in 1979. To this union were born Joi Elizabeth, Erica Denise, and Jonathan Christian. In 1991 he was united in holy matrimony to Wesley Ann Jackson. They are the parents of Wesley Marie Jordan Dawn and Jackson Mark. Mickey confessed a hope in Christ at an early age. Mickey reconfirmed his faith and was baptized with the Holy Spirit and continued to grow spiritually. Mickey was a member of Progressive Church of God in Christ in Maywood, IL. under the pastorate of Apostle Donald L. Alford. Upon his relocation to Tulsa, Oklahoma he united with Higher Dimensions Church pastored by Pastor Carlton Pearson. He later united with Vision of Faith Church in Broken Arrow, Oklahoma pastored by the late Pastor Cowin. Mickey was an avid reader and studied God's Word faithfully. Mickey enjoyed music and was a member of the choir at every church he had membership. The last song he led at Vision of Faith was, 'We Have Come This Far By Faith'. Although, he was not a formally licensed minster, Mickey adhered to the Lord's instruction in Matt. 28:19-20, "go ye into all the world and preach the gospel." He did n0t hesitate to share his beliefs with those he met on a daily basis. Mickey enlisted in the United States Army in December, 1969 and received an honorable discharge in October, 1972. He was a faithful and loyal employee of United Air Lines for more than 34 years. Employment by United Air Lines afforded him the opportunity to travel the world, and that he did. His travels include numerous states in the U.S. including Hawaii and Alaska. He has travelled internationally to Canada, Mexico, Brazil, Bahamas, Jamaica, Germany, Switzerland, France, Japan, Hong Kong, Caribbean cruises, Alaskan cruise, and his all time favorite vacation spot of Auckland, New Zealand. Mickey never met a stranger! He was a very gregarious and outgoing person always wearing a smile on his face. To be a friend, you must first show yourself friendly. Mickey did not take that lightly. He has established some life-long friendships, some lasting over forty years. A few of those friends are Niki Malcolm, Nimbi Cushion, Jim Willie, William Farragut, David Snow and Mickey Jones. Mickey made his transition on August 11, 2012 at St. John's Hospital. He was preceded in death by his mother, Elder Jacqueline Hendry and his sister, Gloria Roxanne Hendry. He leaves to cherish his memory his devoted wife, Wesley Ann Hendry; his children, Joi Elizabeth Friend, Erica Denise Benefield, Jonathan Christian Hendry, Wesley Marie Jordan Dawn Hendry, and Jackson Mark Hendry; grandsons, James and Leon Benefield; his father, Leon Hendry; his brother, Al (Regenia) Hendry; his sisters, Denise Hendry and Deborah (Rudolph) Monroe; aunts, Mary (Louis) Sams and Sharon Laws; uncle, Raymond (Mazie) Morse; nephews, Paul and Jason Hendry; nieces, Ryan and Rachael Hendry, and Monica Fuller and Briana Jackson; a host of grandnephews and grandnieces, cousins, friends, and extended family.
