Obituary of Peggy Cadenhead

Please share a memory of Peggy to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.

Margaret Alice (Peggy) Shugart Cadenhead peacefully departed this world on January 10, 2025, at the remarkable age of 99, surrounded by her loving family at Zarrow Pointe Retirement Community in Tulsa, Oklahoma. True to her character, Peggy radiated joy and happiness throughout her life, a light that shone even in her final days.

Peggy was born on October 23, 1925, in Chattanooga, Tennessee, to W.Y. Shugart and Ruth Church Shugart and grew up in Fort Payne, Alabama. She was the first child in her family to be born in a hospital. She often described her childhood as idyllic—a cherished time filled with love, laughter, and adventure. She grew up alongside her older brothers, Bill and Dick, and her beloved younger sister, Dottie. Her father created a magical playground for them, complete with a playhouse, a zip-line, and other whimsical inventions. Though her brothers teased her endlessly, Peggy adored their antics. Fort Payne, with its small-town charm, became her endless playground. She explored freely, knowing that neighbors would lovingly nudge her home at dinnertime if needed.

After graduating high school in 1943, Peggy embraced her role as a true "Southern Belle" and attended Auburn University. It was there she met the love of her life, Ivie Edward (Ed) Cadenhead, Jr., a charismatic and accomplished student from Montgomery. Together, they made a striking couple, and their shared journey began.

The couple married on August 9, 1947, and settled in Bay Minette, Alabama, where Ed worked as the editor of the local newspaper, the Baldwin County Times. Their first child, Karen, was born during this time. Soon after, the family moved to Columbia, Missouri, while Ed earned his Ph.D., upon which he accepted a teaching position at the University of Tulsa in Tulsa, Oklahoma. Peggy quickly became a cornerstone of the university community, hosting dinners and welcoming new colleagues with warmth and hospitality.

Peggy and Ed’s family grew in Tulsa with the arrival of their son, Ed, followed by their daughters, Kristy and Tricia, a decade later. Peggy had a natural gift for motherhood, creating a loving and nurturing environment where her children thrived. She was the heartbeat of her home, balancing countless responsibilities while showering her family with boundless love and care.

Peggy wore many hats throughout her life. She was a pillar of her beloved All Souls Unitarian Church. She volunteered with Planned Parenthood, counseling young women in times of need. She worked at the Tulsa Public Library, manning the information desk with her characteristic kindness and patience. She visited schools to guide and mentor students, always focused on making the world a better place.

Politics became part of Peggy’s life when Ed ran for Congress. Ever the supportive spouse, she embraced the campaign trail with grace and energy, even sewing matching outfits for her youngest daughters to wear to the events. Later, Peggy herself stepped into the political arena, serving as Chair of the County Democratic Party and running for the State House of Representatives.

After Ed's sudden passing on September 25,1985, Peggy faced this new chapter with resilience and grace. She channeled her energy into her growing family, delighting in her role as grandmother to nine grandchildren—Jill, Jack, Edward, Scott, Peter, Natalie, Caden, Madeline, and Anders—and great-grandmother to seven—Carson, Morgan, Laurel, Lilly, Riley, June, and Lola. Her home became a haven of love and indulgence, where grandchildren enjoyed ice cream for breakfast and the freedom to simply be themselves.

Peggy was a woman of many talents, roles, and passions, but above all, she was a beacon of love, joy, and kindness. Her legacy lives on through the countless lives she touched and the family she nurtured.

Peggy helped make the world a better place.

The only service will be a private family gathering.
