Obituary of Mary Dorothy McNamar
Please share a memory of Mary to include in a keepsake book for family and friends.
Mary Dorothy McNamar was born at home in Skiatook, Oklahoma to John E. and Amelia Gessler Fitzpatrick on September 21, 1926, along with her twin sister and best friend, Mary Catherine Sheehan. Surrounded by her loving family, she passed away peacefully at home on May 30, 2024.
The Fitzpatrick family moved to Tulsa in 1935 where she began 3rd grade at Marquette School. She and Catherine were star choir members and cheerleaders through high school at Marquette. Dorothy attended secretarial school after graduation, excelled in her profession in the petroleum industry for many years and made many lifelong friends.
Dorothy marveled at the wonders of nature, whether in her backyard, having adventures with her troop as a Cub Scout Den Mother or travelling abroad. She enjoyed shuffleboard, won many horseshoe tournaments and loved watching westerns and classic movies. She particularly loved fishing and getting out to the lake as often as possible. Her appreciation for music carried throughout her life, being active in the Tulsa Philharmonic and attending many Tulsa Opera productions. Dorothy was a longtime devoted parishioner of the Church of the Madalene and spent many years in the Women’s Club.
Dorothy didn’t know a stranger. Her heart and her home were always open to those she loved and friends, both old and new, with hugs and a freshly stocked candy dish. With her sharp wit and sunny disposition, she taught us how to laugh through tears and even embrace a little mischief.
Dorothy was preceded in death by her parents, brother, John and seven sisters, Gerry, Ruth, Marguerite, Jane, Francis, Patricia and Catherine and her beloved sons, Stephen and Dennis.
She is survived by her daughters Mary Louise ‘Meg’ of Washington D.C., Martha and Barbara (Michael) both of Tulsa and granddaughter, Emily (Kevin) of Tulsa. She has many nieces and nephews who were always met with a big smile. We all miss her dearly.
