Obituary of James Economou

ECONOMOU, James, born April 22, 1930, passed away peacefully at home on March 15, 2024.  He was born in Tulsa to Christ Economou and Sophia Anton Economou, both of Greece.  James courted and married Urania "Becky" Economou, in 1955.  He is survived by Becky, two sons: Chris and his wife, Vicki Economou, and Dr. Anthony Economou; two sisters: Pope Kingsley and her late husband, Chuck, and Georgia Tsilekas and her husband, Costa; grandchildren: Demetri Economou (Mitra), Thane Economou (Reena), Caitlin Costas (Andy); and great-grandchildren: John, Eleni, Stelliana, and Kahani.

James was a devout Christian and lifelong member of the Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church.  He was honored as an Archon of the Ecumenical Patriarchate by Patriarch Bartholemew of Constantinople, and was a member of Leadership 100 of the Greek Orthodox Archdiocese.  For decades, James served as Holy Trinity's choir director, an officer of AHEPA, and in numerous other volunteer positions.

James served his country proudly in the United States Army in postwar Europe.  He toured with the Seventh Army Symphony Orchestra as a violist before returning to Tulsa to perform in the Tulsa Symphony Orchestra.  He later taught in the Tulsa Public Schools music program.  James is perhaps best known as the longtime owner of the Coney Island Hot Weiners Shop in downtown Tulsa, founded by his father, Christ, in 1926.

The family would like to thank the excellent caregivers at St. Francis Hospice, and our dear friends Neema, Denise, and Lupe. 

Funeral services will be 10:00 a.m. Friday, March 22 at Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church, followed by military honors at Rose Hill Memorial Park.  In lieu of flowers, the family invites you to make a donation to Holy Trinity Greek Orthodox Church in Tulsa.
