My brother Joe seemed to have an inventive mind. We were living in E. Texas with a large pine tree in our backyard. Joe took some wire cable, attached one end in one of the high branches then staked the other end in the ground. This was his idea to make a person ride the cable from the tree to the ground and he asked our brother Dick to try it. So, Dick did by jumping off the limb, hanging onto a ring, and as he left the limb he started down head first. Can you picture Dick's head hitting the stake with his head? End of story- Joe took it down.
Joe tried his skill at photography once when we were living in a house, family of 5, and had only one bathroom! Joe had to use the bathtub to develop his prints. So, needless to say, this was his "dark room" and his sign on the door said, "Keep out- dark room busy!"
Once in Lafayette, La. father told us that this christmas we won't have any presents under the tree. It was Christmas Eve. and my brother Dick couldn't find his other shoe. On Christmas Day when we went into the living room there was a gift under the tree for each of the kids. Dick opened his present to find his other shoe! Come to find out "Joe did it". So, we had a joyous Christmas after all!
Our house in Lafayette had 2 bedrooms and a loft. Sister Sally got 1 bedroom and our parents the other. Guess where my brother slept! He slept in the loft!
While Joe had some time and the money he earned he came up with the idea of putting some wires together (don't ask me how) and he had himself a radio!
This house had a large garage and with our father's permission Joe built his first sailboat. He asked me one time to help hold one end of the keel so he could get the right curve and he honored me by naming his first sailboat "Sally". The joke he started was,"Well, I better clean Sally's bottom- it's full of barnicules".
Joe's interest in sailing came when he belonged to the Sea Scouts and they were taken on a sail where they learned all about sailing.
Joe always looked out for his brother and was very protective of his sister, Sally. I could always call and ask Joe to solve a problem. He never had anything but good things to say about his family- he will be missed.
