Obituary of Anne Tweedy Nelson

Anne Biggs Nelson, beloved mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother passed away on September 1, 2016. Born in Danbury, Connecticut on June 23, 1922, to the late James and Marguerite (Tweedy) Biggs, she left in 1937 to complete high school at Rogers Hall School in Lowell, Massachusetts. Anne then entered Hollins College in Roanoke, Virginia, ultimately earning a degree in economics. When she graduated in 1944, most young men were fighting in either Europe or the South Pacific. So Anne and her best friend decided to move to New York City, find jobs, and enjoy their independence. She did enjoy her time in New York, but she curtailed her independent spirit when she met 1st Lieutenant Robert L. Nelson on a blind date in December, 1944. After the war Anne and Bob married at her family home in Danbury on February 8, 1947. They moved to a tiny apartment in Williamstown, Massachusetts as Bob completed his degree in geology at Williams College. Anne edited the college’s alumni review until Bob graduated in 1948. They moved again to southern California where he completed his doctoral degree in geophysics. Again, Anne edited the university’s alumni newsletter until giving birth to the couple’s first son. Bob obtained a position with an oil company and the family moved frequently before settling in Tulsa in 1964. Along this journey, Anne’s second son entered the family. She was den mother for both sons as they went through Cub Scouts. In Tulsa, Anne served as a dedicated volunteer at Saint Francis Hospital. Following Bob’s retirement in 1982, the couple relocated to the mountains of Durango, Colorado. Here, Anne continued to volunteer for a number of non-profit organizations. These activities ranged from working the counter at a thrift store to serving on the board of Durango’s performing arts center. Bob and Anne returned to Tulsa in 2005. They had been married 64 years at the time of his passing in 2011. Throughout her life, Anne was an accomplished golfer, hiker, equestrian, puzzle master, and bridge player. Anne and Bob were avid international travelers who returned with fascinating stories of their experiences abroad. Anne is survived by her two sons, Eric and Jeff, three grandchildren, and her first great-grandson. All will miss her kindness, gentleness, and love. Memorial service 1:00 P.M. Friday at Montereau Retirement Community. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the American Lung Association.
